It is with profound sadness that the Japanese Association for Coronary Artery Surgery (JACAS) mourns the passing of Professor David P. Taggart, Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Oxford.

Professor Taggart was one of the world's most influential leaders in coronary artery surgery. Throughout his distinguished career, he made extraordinary contributions to the scientific foundation of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), particularly in t he fields of arterial grafting, off pump coronary surgery, and multiple arterial revascularization. Through his numerous landmark publications and clinical studies, he helped shape international guidelines and profoundly influenced the practice of coronary revascularization worldwide.

Professor Taggart also had a very special relationship with Japan. He visited our country on numerous occasions and participated many times in scientific meetings of JACAS, generously sharing his knowledge, experience, and pa ssion for coronary surgery with us.

His relationship with the Japanese cardiovascular community extended far beyond cardiac surgeons. He actively exchanged ideas with cardiologists and many other physicians, always engaging in vigorous scientific discussi on based on evidence. His intellectual rigor, openness, enthusiasm, and warm personality earned him the deep respect and affection of countless colleagues and friends throughout Japan.

With his passing, we have lost not only an outstanding cardiac surgeon and scientist who helped shape modern coronary surgery, but also a true and longstanding friend of the Japanese cardiovascular community.

The scientific legacy and the messages Professor Taggart leaves behind will continue to inspire future generations o f coronary surgeons throughout the world.

On behalf of all members of the Japanese Association for Coronary Artery Surgery, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for his many years of friendship and his invaluable contributions to coronary surgery in Japan.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those around the world who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
